PRE/JUNIOR COMBO CLASSES
The perfect introduction to dance for little ones! Our combo classes consist of the fundamentals of dance through the forms of ballet, tap and acrobatics. Musicality, spatial awareness, taking turns and dance class etiquette are introduced at this age. This class is the perfect setting to encourage a love for dance, learn classroom structure and make new friends.
A classic style that has evolved throughout time, jazz is an energetic and technical style of dance that is exciting to learn and perform. Jazz can be powerful and percussive or expressive and lyrical. Classes teach basic jazz dance technique (think ballet, but with hip music), terminology and movement quality with an emphasis on proper execution of jazz isolations, rhythms and style performed to contemporary music.
With the grace and technique of ballet, but all the emotion of contemporary, lyrical is one of the most popular disciplines for any dancer. Creating an emphasis on long arm and leg lines, as well as proper balance and body placement, lyrical encourages the dancer to interpret the music, and use the choreography to express their emotions. Perfect for the dancer who wants to focus on more than just executing steps, but bringing life to their dance. Ballet is a pre-requisite for lyrical at FSOD.
A range of techniques and styles, Contemporary dance was developed in the early 20th century as a reaction against the rigid techniques of ballet. Pioneers such as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham searched for ease of movement using the body’s natural lines and energy, allowing a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques. Contemporary dance is characterized by its versatility: contemporary can be danced to almost any style of music, or united with other dance forms to create new styles of movement. Contemporary movement generates from the body’s core; therefore, a proper understanding of alignment and placement is necessary to navigate this style. Becoming increasingly popular, contemporary dance technique allows experienced dancers to push new boundaries of body movement, which allows for self-discovery as an artistic individual. Ballet and lyrical is a pre-requisite for contemporary at FSOD.
Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound. Tap focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet. FSOD offers exposure to techniques in Rhythm tap, Broadway Tap and Irish Tap.
A high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers. Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin’, locking, and breaking as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse and forever changing. Dancers love hip hop because of its innovative and cutting-edge movement, and cool music in a fun atmosphere of self-expression!
A cool class for dancers looking to learn new tricks or improve on what they already know. More than just learning how to cartwheel, acrobatics provides dancers the opportunity to increase flexibility and build lower and upper body strength. Grace and balance guide dancers from one movement to the next such as front/back walkovers, chin stands, scorpions and aerials. Each dancer is properly spotted and individualized instruction is provided based on the dancer’s personal progression.
LEAPS, TURNS, CONDITIONING
This class was designed for the serious dancer! A supplement to all forms taught at FSOD, this class hugely emphasis the technical breakdown and mechanics of leaping, jumping and turning utilizing a strong foundation. Without the focus of choreography and steps, dancers can immerse themselves in fine tuning their bodies. Double pirouettes can become triples, leaps become higher and more complex, legs are straighter and the vehicle of the body is pushed to properly execute movements. Dancers engage in exercises to strengthen the core, cardio to build stamina and various stretches to increase flexibility. We purposely set this class on Monday because its a great kick-off to the rest of the dance week!!
